It allows nothing to escape the eagle eyes of archaeologists at Historic England – the government-funded body that takes care of England’s historic environment.

“Using light aircraft, we’re able to discover whole archaeological landscapes instead of a single site at a time,” says Damian Grady, an aerial photographer for Historic England. “Seeing how they’re linked together into a network can help us understand the history of these sites in new ways.”

Here are four sites that aerial surveys have helped us to understand, highlighted as part of Historic England’s Festival of Archaeology, which runs until the end of this month.
